Alistair Buchanan
Alistair Buchanan, a former WGCCC captain and a Past President of Hertfordhire County Cricket Association, has died at the age of 85. James Wright, the County President , has written an obituary which has been published on the HCCA website, and extracts are set out below.
“Members will be sad to hear that Alistair Buchanan died on Saturday 20th April. Alistair had been a member of the County for 57 years, of which 48 were on the committee. He ran the Hertfordshire Young Cricketers for 18 years before being HCCA’s Chairman for a further 19 years and then President for 4 years to 2017.
Alistair was in the !st XI at St Albans School for 4 years and became a good club cricketer, joining Welwyn Garden City CC when he was 15.He was captain for 3 years (1965 to 1967), the last of which they were undefeated throughout the season. A booklet was produced in 1971 to celebrate the club’s 50th year in which eleven people were named as major contributors to the club over that period. Alistair was one of them.
But it has been Alistair’s off field work that has been of major benefit to the County from the time he became a member of the county committee in 1970 . In 1993 he was elected Chairman of HCCA and oversaw major changes as the ECB drove counties to increase participation in grass roots cricket and he set strong foundations which have allowed the County to achieve substantial development and growth. He was elected President of HCCA in 2014 and it was fitting that he was President when the County participated in a match at Lord’s against MCC to celebrate the Lord’s bicentenary.”
Alistair will be greatly missed, and we at WGCCC send our deep sympathy and condolences to his wife, Elisabeth and their family
